The Hopkinville Tigers extended their winning streak over crosstown rival Christian County Thursday evening. The Tigers used a balanced attack, with four different players scoring, as they knocked off the Colonels 5-1 at the Stadium of Champions.
Hoptown got things rolling early in the match, as Welby Horn scored the first of his two goals at the 5:00 mark to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead. Mason Marschand was credited with the assist on the score. The score stayed that way until the 27th minute, when Steven Hermosillo found a rebound out in front of the net and got it past the keeper to extend the lead to 2-0.
Christian County battled back into the match just over three minutes later. Thomas Barrett found the ball loose after a corner kick and drilled the ball past Hoptown goalie Xavier Bussell, who have moved out of goal in an attempt to get to the ball. That cut the lead to 2-1 with ten minutes left in the half.
The Tigers grabbed the momentum right before the half, as Jose Favela scored at the 39:00 mark to make it 3-1 going into the break.
The momentum flow continued in Hoptown’s direction in the opening moments of the seccond half. Coming down the left side of the field, Tyler Greenwell drilled a shot in the right corner of the net to push the Tiger lead out to 4-1.
Welby Horn then effectively sealed the Hopkinsville win with his second goal of the night. That goal coming at the 61:00 mark of the match.
The win improves Hopkinsville to 5-2, while Christian County falls to 1-5-1. The last win for the Colonels in the series came in the 2014 8th District championship game.
