Last season, when the Henderson County Lady Colonels and the Caldwell County Lady Tigers met in the first several days of the soccer season, things did not go well for the Lady Tigers as the Lady Colonels hit them with a 10-0 mercy rule win. This time around, the defending 2nd Region champ had to fight to earn a 3-0 win Monday evening on their home pitch.
The match started out looking like the Lady Colonels might be ready to roll once again. Henderson’s Cecilia Palummo found the net just eight minutes in, to give the Lady Colonels a quick 1-0 lead. However, the Caldwell County defense quickly locked down on the Lady Colonels to try and keep them close at hand.
The match stayed 1-0 until the 35:00 mark, when Palummo came up with the assist on a goal scored by Nadia Gilbert to extend the Henderson County lead to 2-0 going into the break.
As they did to open the match, the Lady Colonels struck quickly once the second half got underway. Isabella Mcchessney scored just five minutes into the half to extend the lead to 3-0.
That would be the last goal surrendered on the night for the Caldwell County defense as Henderson County held on for the win.
The telling stat of the night was shots on goal, as Henderson County had 37, while Caldwell County managed just four. A big night in goal for Karsyn Parker, who came up with 21 saves in the contest.
Caldwell County head coach Rhett Miller said he was pleased with Karsyn Parker’s performance, noting that she was tested big time and made plenty of saves. He added that the Lady Tiger defense did a good job of making Henderson County take outside shots.
With the loss, Caldwell County falls to 2-1 on the season, while Henderson County improves to 2-1.
