Travis Perry scored 13 of his game-high 25 points in the fourth quarter as Lyon County rallied for a 59-57 victory at Caldwell County in season-opening basketball action Tuesday night.

Down 39-30 late in the third quarter, Lyon went to a full-court press defense that swung the momentum.

Most of Caldwell’s 18 turnovers in the contest came in the final 10 minutes as the Tigers fell just short of evening the all-time series between the two schools.

Perry gave the Lyons the lead for good with a steal and layup with 1:56 to play. That gave Lyon a 56-54 advantage and helped the Lyons improve their advantage in the series to 73-71.

Down 59-56, Caldwell still had a chance late when Cayden Fraliex was fouled attempting a 3-pointer with 3.2 seconds remaining.

But Fraliex saw his first shot at the line rattle out. He made the second to make it a two-point game, then deliberately missed the third.

Caldwell’s Cole Smiley tracked down the rebound on the baseline, but his highly-contested shot at the buzzer came up short.

Gunnar Bingham added 16 points for the Lyons while Jackson Shoulders finished with 14 points and 13 rebounds. Perry added eight rebounds to his total.

Tripp Branch had a big game offensively for Caldwell, burying five 3-pointers and totaling 24 points. Jamarius Blaine had nine points while Smiley added eight points and eight boards.

Lyon led by as much as five points in the first half before taking a 25-22 lead to halftime.
But Caldwell scored the first eight points of the second half as part of a 17-5 burst that put the Tigers up 39-30 with less than a minute left in the third quarter.

Caldwell still led 54-50 following a three-point play by Fraliex with 4:01 to play.

But Lyon countered with seven straight points to go up 57-54 and led the rest of the way behind Perry’s big fourth quarter.

Caldwell County did win the “Border Battle” traveling trophy in a competition between students from the two schools.

The Lyons and Tigers will meet again Jan. 30 in Eddyville.
