Caldwell County has swept the 2nd Region volleyball Player and Coach of the Year awards from the Kentucky Volleyball Coaches Association.
Junior Olivia Mitchell is the Player of the Year while Daniel Cortner has been named Coach of the Year.
The Lady Tigers carry a 21-13 record into the regional tournament this week and are the top-ranked team in the 2nd Region.
Mitchell leads Caldwell County with 580 kills this sason. She is averaging 5.69 kills per set. Mitchell is second on the team in digs with 228. She also has 20 blocks and 48 service aces this season.
Caldwell won its 13th straight district championship last week.
It is the eighth time a Lady Tiger has been named 2nd Region Player of the Year by the KVCA.
Besides Mitchell, other Caldwell County players honored were Mandy Gray (2007), Emily Meeks (2009), Casey Stone (2010), Jessie Stone (2011 and 2012), Katie VanHooser (2016) and Carlie Peek (2017).
It is the seventh time Caldwell County has had Coach of the Year.
Former Lady Tiger skipper Sue Stone won the award five times — 2007, 2008, 2010, 2011 and 2014.
Cortner has now claimed the honor twice. He was also named Coach of the Year in 2016.
The Kentucky Volleyball Coaches Association announced its 12th-annual Region Players and Region Coaches of the Year on Monday.
All recipients will be honored at the 2019 KHSAA State Tournament at Valley High School in Louisville during ceremonies between the semifinal matches on Saturday, Nov. 9.
Selections were voted on by KVCA member coaches.
