After snapping Hopkinsville’s long region unbeaten streak, Henderson County is in the early stages of their own streak with a 7-0-1 record against region opposition this year. Their tie came to Madisonville back in the first week of the season.
The Colonels remain No. 1 in this week’s YSE Super 7 as top teams begin to distance themselves from the pack.
1) Henderson County (12-2-2) – The Colonels’ two losses have come against teams ranked in the state’s top 15 (No. 10 Oldham County and No. 13 Daviess County). After a Saturday showdown with Trigg County, the Colonels close the regular season against three Region 1 teams, including Marshall County and McCracken County.
2) Hopkinsville (10-7-1) – The Tigers have struggled with an inconsistent offense all season, but their defense has kept them challenging for the region’s top spot. Hoptown is a team needing the same late-season spark that propelled them to the state semifinals last year. If they find their offense, the Tigers will prove to be a tough out yet again.
3) Madisonville (11-3-2) – The Maroons saw a four-match winning streak halted Thursday in a 1-1 tie at Apollo. Like Henderson and Hoptown, the Maroon defense is what is keeping them separated from the rest of the pack. They have allowed just 12 goals in 16 games and have allowed one or fewer goals in five straight matches.
4A) University Heights (10-5-1) – The Blazers and Wildcats played a memorable contest that finished in a 2-2 tie. UHA had two goals disallowed that still leaves a sour taste in their mouths. The tie demonstrated just how even the Blazers and Wildcats are this season. If there are a couple of teams that can throw a wrench into the works come region tournament time, it’s UHA and Trigg County.
4B) Trigg County (12-1-2) – The Wildcats join Henderson County as the region’s lone unbeaten teams. One will likely suffer their first defeat Saturday when the teams meet in Cadiz. Trigg’s defense has allowed just 14 goals in 15 games and has been the backbone of the team. After the Henderson matchup, Trigg will host Hopkinsville Wednesday.
6) Caldwell County (4-9-1) – First-year coach Tanner Reed has the Tigers playing their best soccer of the season. Caldwell has won three of five and their four wins has already doubled last year’s total. They will see Hopkins County Central again in the district tournament, and a second win over the Storm will see them advance to the region tournament – something that seemed like a stretch in the first weeks of the season.
7) Christian County (3-13-1) – The Colonels knocked off a pair of teams that were challenging them for the final spot in the Super 7 – Hopkins County Central and Fort Campbell. They also dropped a 3-2 decision to Caldwell County which keeps them behind the Tigers in this week’s Super 7.
