Caldwell County got in its final preseason tuneup Friday night, traveling to Mortons Gap for a three-team affair with Hopkins County Central and Ohio County.
The schools rotated offenses and defenses throughout the scrimmage, which was played in 10-minute periods with a running clock.
Caldwell outscored Hopkins Central two touchdowns to one.
The Tigers got a 14-yard scoring run from DeEric Hollowell during its offensive series against the Hopkins Central defense. Tripp Branch turned a short pass into a 40-yard touchdown reception.
Meanwhile, Hopkins Central scored on its final play when its offense went against the Caldwell defense, getting into the end zone on a 37-yard pass play.
Riley Orange picked off a pass for the Tigers during that series.
Caldwell’s offense put up 163 yards during its period against Hopkins Central.
The Tigers did not fare as well offensively against Ohio County, but the Caldwell defense kept the Eagles out of the end zone as well.
Caldwell’s junior varsity players added two touchdowns late in the scrimmage, with Logan Chambliss and Max Kramer each catching touchdown passes.
For the varsity, quarterback Russ Beshear connected on 12 of 19 passes for 158 yards and a touchdown in combined action against both Hopkins Central and Ohio.
Hollowell rushed for 41 yards and a score while also catching four passes for 23 yards.
Tate VanHooser caught three passes for 44 yards while Branch had two grabs for 62 yards and a TD.
Caldwell can now turn its attention to next week’s regular-season opener against Christian County. The Colonels will visit Tiger Stadium in Princeton on Friday, Aug. 23.
