The Hopkinsville Tigers began defense of their 8th District and 2nd Region titles on Monday at the Stadium of Champions, shutting out the visiting Logan County Cougars 3-0. The Tigers haven’t lost an opener since 2008 and will look to move to 2-0 on Tuesday when they welcome South Warren.
Jose Favela opened the scoring with a 35th minute penalty kick and the Tigers held a 1-0 edge at the half. Preston Durham doubled the advantage in the 52nd minute off an assist from Favela, before Steven Hermosillo found the back of the net for the final score.
The Tigers outshot the Cougars 22-5, with starting goalkeeper Xavier Bussell making a couple of saves and Manny Martinez coming up with a second-half stop to combine on the shutout.
