Carlisle County junior Daven McGee gave up just four base hits to Lyon County on Monday as the Comets turned back the Lyons 3-1 in the CFSB Challenge at Murray State University’s Reagan Field.
Lyon (20-9) managed just an unearned run in the bottom of the third inning. That tied the game at 1-1 at the time. But Carlisle (21-10) put up two runs in the top of the fifth to regain the lead.
Lyon freshman Jackson Shoulders also pitched well. He allowed three earned runs on eight base hits while striking out four and walking one.
Carlisle went up 1-0 in the top of the third on a sacrifice fly to left by Truman Davis.
Lyon tied it in the bottom of the inning when Gabe Board led off the inning with a single. He scored one out later on a throwing error while taking third base following a grounder to short from Gunnar Bingham.
Carlisle loaded the bases in the top of the fifth with one out. Shoulders struck out the next batter. But Blake
Elder delivered a ground-ball single through the left side to score two runs and give the Comets all the offense they would need.
Elder finished 2-for-4 with the two RBIs for Carlisle. Ian Fry was 2-for-4 and scored twice.
Board was 2-for-4 for Lyon while Brody Williams and Jake Klueppel each added singles.
The game was the first game of a doubleheader hosted by Marshall County at MSU. Caldwell County played the Marshals in the nightcap.
