What a jumble the Second Region baseball race is. It seems everyone has beaten everyone, leaving the region race the most wide-open in recent years. So, what factors do we use to rank the teams this week?
It’s hard to compare wins and losses when teams don’t throw their top pitchers so let’s look at what happens when they do. Henderson County is 7-1 when they pitch Keaton Holmes and Bryce Willett, with Willett losing to Hopkinsville as their only loss.
Madisonville’s duo of Alex Gray and Blake Reynolds have been the most impressive against the region – a record of 10-1. Gray 6-1 against the region, only losing to Hopkinsville. Reynolds is 4-0.
Christian County may be the wild card in the race. Wyatt Stevenson owns a win over Hopkinsville and a loss to Madisonville. Eric Silvy is 2-2 against the region. Lane Diuguid owns wins over UHA and Hopkinsville but hasn’t pitched in over a month due to an injury. If he is able to return, it makes the Colonels a region favorite once again.
Lyon County is the first region team to reach 20 wins. Travis Yancy is 4-0 against the region, including a win over Madisonville. Lyon is 1-1 in region games where Jackson Shoulders starts. He did get the save in a win over the Colonels Friday that forged a season split.
Union County has two of the top pitchers in the region in Coy Burns and Cade Duncan, but the duo is just 2-3 against region teams, with two of those losses coming to Henderson County.
Hopkinsville is 4-3 when Zach Caudill and Robert Justus pitches against region teams.
Caldwell County is 7-3 when either Bryar Riley or Gabe East pitches. Riley is 6-2 against the region, with a win over Christian County.
When it comes to the postseason, teams that throw off are usually sent home early. So based on each team’s top pitchers, here is where we stand this week with the Super 7.
1) Henderson County (17-12)
2) Madisonville (16-12)
3) Christian County (13-11)
4) Lyon County (20-8)
5) Union County (17-12)
6) Hopkinsville (17-8)
7) Caldwell County (14-11)
