Ben Russell decided the time was right to take over his own high school soccer program and put his own thumbprint on it. After nine seasons as an assistant coach with the Hopkinsville Lady Tigers, Russell was introduced as the new head coach at Heritage Christian Academy Thursday.
Russell attended HCA in the middle school before moving on to Hopkinsville where he played soccer and baseball. He has coached at the club level with the local Ambush soccer program and has been Jeff Addison’s assistant coach at Hopkinsville for nearly a decade.
Russell replaced long-time HCA coach Tony Henson who stepped down at the end of the 2018 season. He says conditioning and fundamentals will be the signature of his teams at HCA.
Heritage Christian Academy graduated a large senior class but returns KCAA All-State player Thomas West, the school’s all-time leading scorer. HCA was 3-5-1 in league play last year and 8-7-1 overall, losing to Highlands in the first round of the KCAA State Tournament.
