Drew McGowan’s seventh inning single scored Nick Luckey to give University Heights Academy a 3-2 win over Mayfield in the second of two games Saturday at Crittenden County. The Blazers lost to the Rockets 12-7 in the first game.
Luckey led off the seventh inning with a single and moved to second base on a Dustin Moon single. An error moved Luckey to third where he would score on McGowan’s hit to left field.
Eston Glover had UHA’s lone extra base hit of the game – a double.
Luke Welch got the complete game win, allowing five hits and no earned runs. He struck out 11 and walked just two.
In the opening game of the day in Marion, Crittenden County jumped out to a 5-2 lead and added five more runs in the fifth inning on their way to a 12-7 win.
Ian Ellington and Logan Bailey combined to allow just four UHA hits. Dan Johnson had two hits and drove in four runs for the Blazers. Tanner Thomas also had a two-runs single.
Caden McCallister and Maddux Carlson both had two hits and four RBIs for Crittenden County (12-11).
Both teams combined for 16 walks, with UHA pitchers issuing nine of those.
University Heights (11-13) hosts Ohio County Monday.
