Lyon County scored three times in the bottom of the fifth inning to rally past Hickman County 3-2 Saturday morning to open pool play at the state All A Classic softball tournament at Jack C. Fisher Park in Owensboro.

The Lady Lyons (16-7) will next face Washington County at 12:30. Lyon wraps up pool play at 4 p.m. against four-time defending All A state champion Louisville Holy Cross. The top two teams in the pool will advance to Sunday’s single-elimination championship bracket.

Singles by Allye Culp, Kerstin Craft and Sydney Melton loaded the bases with one out in the fifth for the Lady Lyons.

A wild pitch allowed one run to score, then Tori Schenk’s RBI single to left tied the game at 2-2. Calista Collins followed with another single to left, scoring another run to put Lyon in front 3-2.

The Lady Lyons couldn’t do any more damage in the inning despite loading the bases with one out. However, Culp was strong enough in the circle to make those three runs stand up.

Culp went all seven innings, allowing two runs on three hits while striking out four and walking one.

Hickman (15-6) scored twice in the top of the third to take the lead. However, both of those runs were unearned after a dropped ball in the outfield extended the inning.

Bella Batts drove in the Lady Falcons’ runs with a double to center.

Kaelyn Conger was 2-for-3 with a double for Lyon while Collins was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Melton was 2-for-4.

Lyon likely secures a spot in Sunday’s action with a win over Washington County in its next game.
