Lyon County extended a winning streak while ending a losing string.
The Lyons had dropped 20 straight games to longtime rival Caldwell County. But Travis Yancy’s RBI single to right field in the bottom of the seventh inning changed that Saturday afternoon at Lee S. Jones Park in Eddyville.
Yancy’s base hit gave the Lyons a 10-9 victory. It extended Lyon’s win streak to seven straight as the Lyons improved to 11-5 on the season.
Caldwell, now 7-7, wasn’t about to let its run against its former district foe go down easily.
Trailing 7-1 after five innings, the Tigers rallied for five runs in the top of the sixth inning to get within 7-6. Oliver Parker doubled home two runs in the inning while Tate VanHooser doubled in another to get Caldwell within a single run.
Lyon countered with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Brody Williams had an RBI single and Jake Klueppel drew a bases-loaded walk. That made it 9-6 heading to the seventh.
But Caldwell battled back to tie things. Levin East doubled home two runs, then Gabe East delivered a sacrifice fly to center to make it 9-9.
In the bottom of the frame, Gunnar Bingham and Gabe Board each singled to start the inning. But it looked like Caldwell pitcher Bryar Riley would get out of the jam, with a 5-3 double play leaving just a runner at second with two outs.
However, Travis Yancy singled through the right side, driving Board in with the game-winning run.
Lyon banged out 15 base hits in the contest. Board was 3-for-4 with an RBI, two doubles and scored four times. Jackson Shoulders was 3-for-5 with a double, an RBI and three runs scored. Brady Darnall was 2-for-4 and knocked in two while Williams was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Yancy finished 2-for-5 at the plate with a pair of runs batted in.
Bingham was the winning pitcher for the Lyons, throwing one inning in relief of starter Austin Long and Board. Bingham allowed no runs on one hit.
Caldwell, which had won four of its last five games entering Saturday’s tilt, totaled 11 base hits against the Lyons.
John Davis was 3-for-3 with a double for the Tigers while Parker was 3-for-4 with an RBI. Gabe East went 2-for-3 and knocked in three while Brian Owen was 2-for-4 with a double.
Caldwell next visits 7th District foe Hopkins County Central on Tuesday.
The Lyons will entertain Calloway County on Monday.
Lyon’s last win over Caldwell had been a 9-6 decision in the 2007 season opener.
