Caldwell County’s trip to the Oakland High School Tennis Invitational in Murfreesboro, Tenn., on Friday and Saturday was highlighted by a runner-up finish by junior Belle Englebright in No. 1 singles action.
Englebright’s only loss came in the final match against the No. 11-ranked girl in the nation, Carly Briggs of Calhoun, Ga. Briggs is also a junior.
In the first matches on Friday, Englebright won 6-0, 6-0; Chasie Phelps prevailed 9-7; Shae Sharp was victorious 8-6; Kaylee McEnaney lost 8-0; and Josie Shaffer lost 6-1, 6-1.
In the next round, Maddie Morgan was defeated 8-5; Phelps lost 8-1; and McEnaney won 8-6.
Morgan then picked up an 8-3 victory while Sharp lost 8-2.
In girls doubles, Morgan and Phelps lost 8-1 while Englebright and McEnaney fell 10-8.
Englebright and McEnaney won their next match 9-8 (7-5) while Sharp and Shaffer were defeated 8-0.
Morgan and Phelps dropped their next match 8-6 while Sharp and Shaffer fell 8-5.
In boys singles action on Friday, Jordan Hammett fell 8-3; Michael Henry lost 6-1, 6-1; Brycen Banister won 9-8 (7-5); Ryan Hammett was defeated 8-2; and Billy Wallace lost 8-2.
In the next round, Shelton Cansler dropped his match 8-5 and Jordan Hammett won 8-2.
Cansler fell 8-1 in his next match; Banister was defeated 8-0, Ryan Hammett won 8-4 and Wallace fell 8-0.
In boys doubles, Henry and Banister were defeated 6-0, 6-0 while Ryan Hammett and Wallace were victorious 6-1, 6-2.
Cansler and Jordan Hammett lost 8-0. They then dropped their next match 8-2.
In Saturday’s boys singles action, Cansler dropped an 8-1 decision; Jordan Hammett fell 8-3 and 8-4; Henry was defeated 8-1 and 8-4; Banister won 8-0 then forfeited 8-0; Ryan Hammett won 8-6 but then fell 8-0; Wallace won his match 6-3, 6-4.
In doubles on Saturday, Cansler and Jordan Hammett won their first match 9-8 (7-2), then dropped an 8-2 decision; Henry and Banister lost 8-3 but won their next match 8-5; Wallace and Ryan Hammett fell by scores of 8-0 and 8-1.
In girls singles action on Saturday, Englebright won her first match 6-3, 2-6, 10-8 but then fell in her final match 6-0, 6-0; Morgan lost 8-5 but came back to win her next match 8-0; Phelps dropped an 8-0 decision but then won 8-1; Sharp fell 8-2 but won her final match 8-6; McEnaney was defeated 9-8 (7-2) but bounced back to claim an 8-1 victory; and Shaffer won by forfeit 8-0 before dropping her final match 8-0.
In girls doubles on Saturday, Morgan and Phelps dropped their match 6-4, 6-3; Englebright and McEnaney fell 8-4 then won their next match 8-0; Sharp and Shaffer lost 8-3 and fell 8-4.
The Caldwell tennis teams will be in action again on Thursday when they host Webster County at the CCHS tennis courts.
