Eric Silvy pitched into the fifth inning, allowing two earned runs on five hits, as Christian County picked up a 6-3 victory at Caldwell County on Monday.
Austin Fields was 3-for-3 with an RBI and Wyatt Stevenson went 3-for-4 to help the Colonels win in their first visit to Princeton’s VFW Ballpark in over 10 years.
Caldwell (3-4) grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning with an unearned run. But the Tigers stranded two runners and lost another on the basepaths. For the game, Caldwell left 10 men on base.
Christian (5-2) got an unearned run of its own in the second to tie things, then put up a three-run third to take the lead. Elijah Owens and Lane Diuguid each had RBI singles while another run came in on an error. That put the Colonels up 4-1.
Caldwell got one of those runs back in the bottom of the third when Tate VanHooser slammed a home run to left-center. But the Tigers could get no closer than two runs.
The defensive highlight of the day for Caldwell came in the top of the fourth inning. Christian put its first two batters on base — Stevenson’s grounder to second hitting the umpire for an infield single. However, three pitches later, a grounder to second was turned into a 4-6-3-2 triple play by the Tigers to get them out of the inning.
But Caldwell could not ride that momentum at the plate, going down 1-2-3 in the home half of the frame.
Fields singled to center to drive in another run for Christian in the top of the fifth to make it 5-2.
The Colonels added an unearned tally in the seventh to go up 6-2.
Caldwell made things interesting in the bottom of the seventh when its first two men reached base. A two-out single by Oliver Parker brought in a run to make it 6-3 and get the potential tying run to the plate. However, a grounder to third ended the game.
Silvy got relief help from Keith Stallons, who pitched the final 2.1 innings. He allowed just one earned run on two hits while picking up the save.
Owens finished 2-for-3 at the plate for the Colonels with an RBI while Diuguid was 2-for-4 and drove in a run.
VanHooser led the Caldwell offense, going 2-for-2 with the homer.
Christian will be back in action again on Tuesday afternoon when it hosts Logan County.
The Tigers will next play in the Warren County Invitational on Thursday and Friday.
