Lyon County ran its season-opening win streak to four games before running into a very solid Fort Zumwalt South (Mo.) squad Saturday afternoon at Marshall County’s Big Orange Classic.
The Lyons opened the day in Draffenville by rallying past Clayton, from St. Louis, 4-3.
The Greyhounds grabbed a 3-0 lead in the top of the third, but Lyon put up runs in each of the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to pull out the victory.
Travis Yancy drove in Lyon’s first run with an RBI double to center. He then scored on a sacrifice fly to center by Brody Williams to pull Lyon within 3-2 in the fourth inning.
Lyon tied things in the fifth when Aidan Rush singled with one out, advanced to third on a single by Gunnar Bingham, then scored on a passed ball.
A leadoff walk by Jake Klueppel in the sixth led to the go-ahead run. Klueppel moved up on a walk by Williams, then took third when Jackson Shoulders hit into a fielder’s choice. Klueppel came in to score on a wild pitch, pushing the Lyons in front 4-3.
Back-to-back one-out singles gave Clayton a chance in the top of the seventh. However, a strikeout and a grounder to short ended the game.
Shoulders was the winning pitcher for Lyon. He went the distance on the mound, surrendering three unearned runs on seven base hits. He struck out six and walked just one.
Shoulders and Rush each went 2-for-3 at the plate for the Lyons.
Lyon then ran into strong pitching against Fort Zumwalt South of St. Peters, Mo.
Two Bulldogs pitchers, Zach Judson and Grant Stephens, combined to shut out the Lyons on five hits as Fort Zumwalt South prevailed 5-0.
Fort Zumwalt South scratched out one run in the top of the first inning, then hit Lyon for three runs in the fourth. Back-to-back home runs by Riley Stephens and Jake Markert highlighted the inning.
The Bulldogs added another run in the sixth to make it 5-0.
Lyons’ five base hits were singles by Gabe Board, Yancy, Williams, Klueppel and Christian O’Daniel.
The Lyons will be back in action on Monday when they host Crittenden County for a 5th District contest.
