Caldwell County sophomore left-hander Deontaye “Bizzle” Walls blanked Clayton, Mo., over the final four innings to pick up his first varsity win on the mound, and the Tigers went on to rout the Greyhounds 15-3 at Marshall County’s Big Orange Classic on Friday.
Clayton (0-2), located in St. Louis, scored three times in the bottom of the second inning to grab the lead.
But Caldwell (2-0) answered with six runs in the top of the fourth, then put the game away with six more runs in the top of the seventh.
The Tigers did all of their damage in the fourth inning with two outs. Gabe Dyer doubled inside the first-base bag to drive in two runs and tie the game. Easton Thompson later doubled off the fence in left field to drive in another run as Caldwell went up 6-3.
Caldwell scored in each of its final four at-bats, going up 7-3 in the fifth inning and 9-3 through six innings.
Meanwhile, Walls took over for starting pitcher Gabe East in the fourth inning and put up four scoreless innings.
Caldwell returns to Draffenville on Saturday for two more games in the Big Orange Classic. The Tigers are scheduled to face Fort Zumwalt South of St. Peters, Mo., at 3 p.m. before playing Mayfield at around 6 p.m.
