The Lyon County Lyons got a jolt from a Jake Kleuppel long-ball and overcame an early deficit to beat visiting Marshall County 8-6 on Tuesday night. The Lyons top the Marshals for only the second time in program history to move to 2-0 after an 11-0 victory over Dawson Springs on Monday.
Down 3-0 in the bottom of the third, Lyon County’s Kleuppel crushed an offering from Marshall starter Brock Anderson to trim the margin to a single run and build some momentum for the Lyons.
In the bottom of the third, a Travis Yancy double brought home Aidan Rush, Gabe Board scored on a wild pitch, and Keaton Bridges followed with an RBI single for the Lyons’ first lead at 5-3.
Marshall’s Jordan Riley hit a 2-run shot in the top of the fifth, before Lyon’s Brody Williams and Brady Darnell drove in runs in the bottom of the inning for an 8-5 advantage.
Yancy came on in the sixth, yielding a run on an RBI single by Cole Griggs, but that would be it for the Marshals, as Yancy induced two ground-outs and a pop-out in the seventh to close out the victory.
Capello worked five innings for the win, yielding 5 runs, 4 earned, on 8 hits with a walk and 4 strikeouts. Kleuppel finished 3-3 at the plate, driving in 2 and scoring twice. Williams, Yancy and Rush each had 2 hits, while Bridges and Board each hit safely once.
Anderson took the loss for the Marshals, lasting three innings while giving up 5 earned runs on 6 hits, with a couple of walks and 4 strikeouts. Griggs, Skyler Brown, and Brody Ives each had 2 hits, while Riley drove in 2.
