Webster County Ends Lady Colonels’ Season 57-36 in Region Semis

The girls’ Second Region basketball championship game is quickly becoming a Sixth District family reunion. For the fourth time in five seasons, Webster County will meet rival Henderson County for the chance to advance to the Sweet 16 as both teams took care of business in Monday’s semifinals.

Henderson County held off Madisonville 52-42, while Webster County ended Christian County’s season for a third straight year with a 57-36 win over the Lady Colonels.

Webster County showed off their slick passing and ability to knock down the jumper as they shot 65-percent from the field and 56-percent for the game. Christian County struggled from the field, hitting just 10-of-38 shots (26-percent), including 6-of-28 inside the arc.

Webster County jumped out to an 8-0 lead and never looked back, leading 16-6 after one quarter and 28-16 at halftime. The Lady Trojans hit 11-of-23 shots from the field, while Christian County was ice-cold, hitting 5-of-21 for 24-percent. Webster also had just one first half turnover.

Free throws (5) and second chance points (5) kept Christian County within striking distance while the were having trouble making shots.

Aaliyah Hampton had 10 of Christian County’s 16 first half points.

In the second half, Christian County never got any closer than 13 points as the Lady Trojans hit 13 of their 20 shots in the second half. Webster County finished with 15 assists on 24 made baskets in the contest.

Freshman Reagan Price, who transferred to Webster from Union County before the season began, led all scorers with 18 points and added eight rebounds. Region Player of the Year Karlie Keeney added 12 points, and Sadie Wurth scored 10. Marissa Austin scored nine points and had six assists.

Hampton scored 15 points in her final game as a Lady Colonel. Bianna Snorton scored 11 points, and Trinity McGee added eight points and nine rebounds as only four Lady Colonels reached the scoring column.

The senior class of Hampton, Snorton, Kinara Phillips, and Talitha Bryant finish their careers with 70 wins and two district titles. They were 18-13 this year.

Webster County (29-3) and Henderson County (17-8) will meet in the region championship game for the fourth time in five years and sixth time overall. Henderson County is 14-6 all-time in region championship games, while Webster County is 5-8. Webster County won all three matchups with Henderson during the season.
