The Trigg County boys’ basketball team began play in the Duster Thomas Hoops Classic in Pinckneyville, IL on Thursday, falling 48-34 to top-seeded Richland County (Olney, IL). The Wildcats shot a better percentage from the field than the Tigers, but were undone by 20 turnovers. Olney took full advantage, outscoring Trigg 19-5 in points off turnovers.
The Wildcats held Olney to a single basket in the opening quarter and led 8-3. With 2:48 to play in the first half, Trigg had built the margin to 6, but the Tigers closed with a flurry to outscore the Wildcats 17-7 and take a 5-point lead into haftime.
Olney continued to stretch the lead after the break, building a 37-26 advantage with 8 minutes to play. The Tigers’ biggest lead was 16 with 2:48 left.
Kendric Adams had 13 points and 6 rebounds to lead Trigg County, followed by Gavin Grubbs with 10. Grubbs knocked down the Wildcats’ only 3-pointer of the contest.
Brent Hatten paced the Tigers with 14 points and 6 boards, followed by Sutton Dunn with 11 and 6.
Trigg County slips to 6-6 on the year and will face Union County (4-3) at noon on Friday.
