We have all seen those games where a team gets on a roll and it seems like the other team can do nothing to slow it down, and it snowballs out of control. That is exactly what happened to the UHA Blazers Sunday afternoon in the consolation bracket championship game of the Chad Gardner Law King of the Bluegrass. Evanston Township hit six three pointers in the second quarter and five more in the third quarter to break open a close game and run away from the Blazers for a 95-63 win.
UHA opened the game with their best start of the touranment. Drew McGowan opened the game hot for the Blazers, scoring seven points in the first three minutes, as UHA opened with a 9-3 lead. KyKy Tandy got rolling in the final four minutes of the quarter, as the Blazers took a 21-17 lead.
Tandy kept the Blazers rolling at the beginning of the 2nd quarter, scoring seven quick points, and pushing the UHA lead to 30-23 with 5:21 to go in the half. Then Evanston got hot, and things changed in a hurry.
Of their next six baskets, the Wildkits connected from behind the arc five times. Over the rest of the half, Evanston outscored the Blazers 17-6 to take a 40-36 lead into the locker room.
The break did nothing to slow with Wildkits down in the third quarter. Evanston scored seven in a row to open the quarter and move out to a 47-36 lead. The Blazers got a free throw from Drew McGowan and a basket from Tandy to cut the lead to 47-39 and appeared to have some momentum. However, McGowan was called for a foul, and while the teams were lining up, it appeared that McGowan and Tandy were discussing the call when an official apparently thought KyKy Tandy’s comments were directed towards him and handed down a very questionable technical foul call.
Evanston made all four free throws and hit yet another 3-pointer to make it a seven point trip, and the game essentially ended there. The Wildkits would connect on another three shots from behind the arc, and when the quarter ended and the smoke cleared, Evanston had blown the lead out to 71-46.
Reserves saw a good deal of action for both teams in the final quarter, as Evanston pulled on out to the final 32 point margin.
Tandy finished the game with 19 points for the Blazers. McGowan and Taquan Hollwell had 13 each, and Amani McGee added 11.
For the game, Evanston hit 17 3-pointers on 32 attempts, eleven of the made shots coming in the middle two quarters. Blake Peters, who hit seven 3s, scored 23 to lead the Wildkits.
UHA falls to 9-2 going into the Christmas break. They return to action after Christmas in the Traditional Bank Holiday Classic in Lexington.
