The Lyon County girls’ basketball team took a 7-point lead into the fourth quarter on Friday night, but Crittenden County reeled them in and went on to win 37-33 in Rocket Gym. The Lady Lyons now stand at 2-2 overall, 1-1 in 5th District play. Crittenden improves to 3-2, 1-1 in the district.
The Lady Lyons started quickly, leading 9-1 after a 3-pointer by Lydia P’Pool with 4:20 left in the opening quarter. The Lady Rockets scored the last 4 points of the frame, trailing 11-9.
Neither team broke double figures in the second quarter, with Allison Murphy scoring 4 of her 9 first-half points. Lyon held the Lady Rockets to 3 points, leading 19-12 at the half.
Lyon County took its first double-digit lead at 23-13 on a Murphy layup with 3:50 to play in the third. However, the Lady Rockets trimmed it to 3 on two free throws by Jaelyn Duncan, before back-to-back baskets by LuLu Taylor and Murphy pushed the margin back to 7 with one quarter to play.
Crittenden County began the fourth on a 9-2 run, tying the game for the first time at 31-31 with 3:10 to play. A bucket by Nahla Woodward gave the Lady Rockets their first lead, part of a 5-0 run that gave them a 35-31 advantage with only a minute left. Calista Collins converted a layup and Lyon County called a timeout down 3, but a Woodward free throw sealed the 4-point victory.
Murphy posted a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Lady Lyons, followed by Collins with 6 and 8 and Rose Smith with 6 points. Woodward led Crittenden with 15, 14 in the second half, to go with 12 boards. Shelby Summers finished with 13 points.
The Lady Lyons return to the court on Tuesday with a trip to face the 4-2 Paducah Tilghman Blue Tornado.
