If the 2018-2019 basketball season has more games like this one, the year could be a fun one in the 2nd Region. In front of a packed and rowdy house, the Lyon County Lyons used a 13-0 run in the 4th quarter to take control of a nip and tuck game and knock off the Caldwell County Tigers 77-66 in the season opener for both teams.
The game was a battle from the very start. The two teams were tied at 8-8, 10-10, and 12-12, before the Lyons finished the quarter on a 10-3 run to take a seven point lead at 22-15. Gabe Board and Jackson Shoulders were dominant for Lyon County in the opening quarter. Shoulders had 11 points, while Board added 7.
Caldwell County opened the game giving a great deal of attention to Lyon County 7th grader Travis Perry, who managed only two points in the opening quarter.
Lyon County was able to hold the Tigers pretty much at arm’s length in the second quarter. The Lyons would lead by as many as ten, before setting for a 41-34 halftime lead. After a quiet 1st quarter, Travis Perry had 11 points in the second quarter for Lyon County, including 9 of 9 at the line.
Caldwell County came out of the locker room in the 3rd quarter and cranked up the defensive pressure. The Tigers limited Lyon County to 15 points in the quarter as they battled their way back into the game. John Davis’ basket late in the quarter put Caldwell County up 54-52, giving the Tigers their first lead since midway through the first quarter. The Lyons ended the quarter with back to back baskets to take back a lead they would never give up again at 56-54.
The game stayed tight through the first half of the 4th quarter. Lyon County was clinging to a 62-60 lead with 3:48 to go when the bottom fell out for Caldwell County. The Lyons scored the next 13 points of the game to take a 75-60 lead and seal the win.
Lyon County was led by Travis Perry with 23 points. Gabe Board added 21 points and 10 rebounds, while Jackson Shoulders had 21 points and 8 rebounds.
Derrin Boyd led the Caldwell County effort with 25 points and 10 rebounds. John Davis, Cayden Fraliex, and Cole Smiley added ten points each.
