The Caldwell County Lady Tigers fended off a late first half rally from Lyon County Tuesday night and got some timely outside shooting to pick up a season opening win. The Lady Tigers went on the road to Eddyville and came away with the 48-40 victory.
It looked early on like Caldwell County might roll to a big win. After Lyon County scored the opening basket of the game, the Lady Tigers outscored the Lady Lyons 16-4 for the rest of the quarter to lead 16-6 after one. Caldwell County got huge first quarter from Bella McConnell, who scored 11, including three made three pointers.
The Lady Tigers extended the lead to 25-12 in the second quarter, before the Lady Lyons made their move to get back in the game. Behind the play of Rose Smith, Lydia P’Poole, and Allison Murphy, Lyon County came roaring back and scored the final ten points of the first half to make it a 25-22 game going into the locker room.
A basket by Murphy to open the second half brought Lyon County to within one at 25-24. Caldwell County’s defense then locked down on the Lady Lyons holding them to five points for the rest of the quarter, as the Lady Tigers edged their lead out to 34-29 headed into the final period.
Caldwell County opened the final quarter on a 9-2 run and the Lady Lyons were never able to mount a serious threat down the stretch. Peyton Young was big for the Lady Tigers down the stretch, scoring seven points in the final quarter.
For the night, Caldwell County was led by Bella McConnell with 15 points and 5 rebounds. Peyton Young had 12 points, all in the second half, and five boards. Jacey Jaggers was a force on the glass for Caldwell County, pulling down 8 rebounds.
The Lady Lyons were led by Alllison Murphy with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Rose Smith added 8 points, while Calista Collins chipped in with seven. Lydia P’Poole pulled down ten rebounds for the Lady Lyons.
