The Henderson County Lady Colonels’ bid for a 4th consecutive 2nd Region girls soccer championship took its first step forward Tuesday night. Henderson’s high powered offense was too much for the Christian County Lady Colonels to overcome as the Lady Colonels from the north won 8-0 to advance on to the regional semifinals Wednesday night.

Henderson senior Maddie Griggs had a big night, scoring five goals in the contest. Griggs scored at 3:10, 11:30, 37:50, 47:10, and 57:00 to lead the way for Henderson County. The Lady Colonels also got goals from Cecilia Palummo at the 48:00 mark and from Nadia Gilbert at 72:15. Henderson also was the beneficiary of an own goal that deflected off a Christian County defender at the 4:00 mark in the first half.

Christian County’s defense put up a valiant effort, but was under fire most of the contest, as the Lady Colonels had trouble pushing the ball deep into Henderson’s end of the field. Henderson’s goalie was only forced to make one save in the contest.

Henderson’s win completed a first round in which the winning teams outscored the losing teams by a margin of 40-2.

Henderson improves to 16-2-1 and will take on Madisonville in Wedneday night’s second semifinal game. Christian County ends the season at 10-9-2.
