Six of seven teams from last week’s YSE girls’ soccer Super 7 held onto their spots this week, with Christian County overtaking Fort Campbell for the final spot the only movement. Of the top four teams, only UHA suffered a loss over the last week, but its body of work is still strong enough to hold off Madisonville-North Hopkins.
1. Henderson County (9-1-1) (Maher Ranking: 8) – The Lady Colonels maintain their grip on the top spot after a week that saw them cruise in their two matches, an 8-0 win over Hopkinsville and 10-0 over Webster County. They go on the road this week to Owensboro and Union County before the match everyone is looking forward to at UHA on September 20.
2. University Heights Academy (6-2) (Maher Ranking: 22) – The Lady Blazers went 2-2 over the last week, with a 2-1 road loss to Bowling Green and a heartbreaking 6-5 shootout loss to Murray in the All A Classic. In between the losses, the Lady Blazers topped McCracken County 8-2 and ended the week on a high note with a 4-1 victory over Hopkinsville. Another big week awaits, with home matches against Christian County, Graves County, Caldwell and a meeting with YSE’s top team Henderson County on September 20.
3. Madisonville-North Hopkins (9-1) (Maher Ranking: 57) – The Lady Maroons continue to do all they can to keep the pressure on UHA, winning four-straight since their only loss of the season, a 4-1 setback to Henderson County. They went on the road to beat Fort Campbell 5-0 and knocked off Ohio County 7-5 at home last week. The Lady Maroons can make a statement this weekend when they get a shot at Murray High in the Donley Classic, with McCracken County also coming in for the tournament.
4. Hopkins County Central (4-1-1) (Maher Ranking: 109) – The Lady Storm certainly didn’t boost their resume with a 3-3 draw with Union County their only match last week, but no one behind them did enough to move up. A small sample size continues to make it hard to gauge how good they are, and games this week against Muhlenberg County and McLean County won’t clear things up. A stretch at the end of the month of Christian County, Trigg County and Caldwell will make or break the Lady Storm.
5. Caldwell County (5-7) (Maher Ranking: 93) – After a 4-1 road loss to Owensboro, the Lady Tigers used a late goal to claim a 1-0 victory over Christian County to snap a three-game losing streak. Caldwell will have ample opportunity to move up this week, with road matches against UHA and Hopkinsville. Most of their losses have come against tough competition, so good showings against the Lady Blazers and Lady Tigers could really help their resume.
6. Hopkinsville (3-6) (Maher Ranking: 105) – The Lady Tigers are in the midst of a four-game losing streak, but only losing 4-1 to UHA, the Lady Blazers’ closest match against 2nd Region competition, is encouraging. Matches this week will give Hoptown the chance to jump at least one spot, with visits from Fort Campbell and Caldwell scheduled. A September 20 meeting with Christian County will probably determine the second seed in the 8th District tournament.
7. Christian County (6-4) (Maher Ranking: 125) – The Lady Colonels used a 4-3 overtime win over Fort Campbell to jump the Lady Falcons and claim the 7th spot this week. County also beat Trigg County 3-0, but lost 1-0 on a late goal to Caldwell County in its other matches last week. Two huge 8th District match-ups are on tap this week, with the Lady Colonels going to Givens Field to face UHA today, followed by a meeting with Hopkinsville next Thursday.
