Less than a minute into the third quarter, Trigg County appeared dead in the water as they trailed Monroe County 20-0. That’s when their defense made a play and sparked the second largest come back in school history at the Scottie Bowl in Glasgow Friday.

The Wildcats scored the final 34 points of the game to beat Monroe county 34-20 – their first win over the Falcons in school history. Sophomore Tae Thompson picked up a fumble midway through the third quarter and returned it 34 yards for a touchdown to put Trigg County on the board for the first time in the game. After a Monroe County turnover, Cam Jordan hit Kyron Grubbs on an 81-yard pass play to inside the Falcon 10. Two plays later, Jordan went in from 2 yards out to quickly cut the deficit to 20-13 with 6:21 left.

Jordan would later add a 47-yard run to tie the game at 20-20 with 13 seconds left in the third period.

Riley Stallons, who had seven interceptions for the Wildcats last year, picked off a pass to set up Trigg County’s go-ahead touchdown. Jordan hit Jakobe Bridges on a screen pass, and Bridges too it 64 yards to the end zone for the score with 8:37 left in the game.

The Wildcats added some insurance with 3:44 left when Jordan took it in from 7 yards out for his third rushing touchdown of the game. Senior Daniel Martin added his fourth straight extra point for the final 34-20 score.

Jordan finished the game with 151 yards rushing on 26 carries. Through the air, the junior was 11-of-16 for 199 yards and a touchdown. Bridges caught five passes for 92 yards and Grubbs added 87 yards on two catches.

Early on it look like Monroe County was going to repeat their double-digit win from last year in the season opener. Braden Murphy scored two touchdowns – one came on a 1-yard run and the other on a 15-yard pass. Murphy finished the game was 75 rushing yards on 19 carries.

Monroe County had 88 rushing yards in the first half but only 10 of the second. Murphy’s 61-yard pass reception from Jamison Geralds less than a minute into the second half gave the Falcons a 20-0 lead before the Wildcats mounted their historic come back.

Trigg County finished the game with 389 total yards compared to 332 for Monroe County. Three different quarterbacks threw for 232 yards for the Falcons, however they were hurt by three second half turnovers that lead to 14 Trigg County points.

If there was a downside to the win for the Wildcats, they were penalized 15 times for 121 yards.

There was a scary moment early in the second quarter when Trigg County’s Alex Curling was injured on a tackle. He was taken to a hospital in Glasgow as a precautionary measure where a family member said he was recovering and moving his extremities with more tests scheduled to be run.

The win was Trigg County’s first in five career games with Monroe County. The first three losses came on the road in the postseason.

The Wildcats return to action next Friday when they make their first trip to McLean County in 18 years to face the Cougars. McLean County beat Ohio County 44-14 Friday night.
