The Christian County Lady Colonels must be starting to like this nine inning thing. For the second game in a row, the Lady Colonels broke a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the 9th inning to pick up a win, this time over Marshall County in the first round of play in the state tournament. Once again it was Tyler Shemwell with the late game heroics, coming up with the RBI single to send Lady Colonel fans off happy to either their hotel rooms or on the road back home.
It was a battle for Christian County from the very beginning of the game. The Lady Marshals got on the board in their very first at bat. Marshall County took advantage of a walk, a hit batter, and a single to go up 1-0 after a half inning.
The game would stay 1-0 until the bottom of the 5th inning when the Lady Colonels came up with three runs. Emmy Blane had a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 1-1. Lexie O’Daniel then gapped double to make it 2-1. The rally ended on an RBI single by Hope Jones, giving Christian County a 3-1 lead.
Marshall County came right back in the top of the 6th inning, taking advantage of some Lady Colonel pitching struggles, to tie the game at 3-3.
Both teams had their chances in the 7th, as Marshall County left two runners on in the top of the inning, while the Lady Colonels left the bases loaded in the bottom of the inning, after loading them up with no outs.
After that it was 1-2-3 innings until the bottom of the 9th. In the bottom of the 9th, after a ground out, Emmy Blane hit a double to center field. Marshall County then walked Lexie O’Daniel to set up a force out. Then, on the first pitch she saw, Tyler Shemwell hit the game winning single to give the Lady Colonels the win.
Shemwell was 2-5 with the game winning RBI. Emmy Blane was 2-4 with an RBI. In the circle, Regan Hancock went nine innings, giving up three runs, two of them earned, striking out three and walking five.
The Lady Colonels advance to the quarterfinal round of the winner’s bracket, where they will play Oldham County Friday morning at 9:00. Oldham County advanced with a 9-7 win over Bourbon County.
