The Hopkinsville Tennis team had a big first day at the 2nd Region tournament in Henderson on Monday, with three singles players and two doubles teams moving-on to Tuesday’s semifinals.
In girls’ singles, 3rd-seeded Riley Fort beat Henderson’s Belle Townsend 7-5, 6-7, 1-0 (10-6) and Hopkins Central’s Jordan Durst 6-1, 6-0 to qualify for the state tournament and earn a spot in Tuesday’s semifinal. Abby Moss fell in the first round to Madisonville’s Madison Cummings 6-3, 7-5 .
The 3rd-seeded girls’ doubles team of Skylar Ray and Anna Maddux won both of their matches, 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-2) over Madisonville and 6-3, 6-4 over Hopkins Central, moving into the semifinal with the knowledge they’ll be playing at state regardless of Tuesday’s results. 7th graders Ella Lester and Allie Fort beat Caldwell’s Shae Sharp and Kaylee McEnaney 6-0, 6-2 to advance to the quarterfinal against Madisonville’s 2nd-seeded duo of Emily Shockley and Emily Fischels. Lester and Fort nearly pulled-off the upset, before bowing-out in a 3rd-set tiebreaker 7-6, 5-7, 1-0 (11-9).
In boys’ singles, No. 2 seed Newcomb Maddux and teammate Edward Lee Major earned two wins each to move into the semifinals. Maddux didn’t drop a game in beating Lyon’s Brandon Burban and Fort Campbell’s Jeff Watson, with Major winning 6-0, 6-0 against Caldwell’s Madux Cummins and 7-5, 6-0 over Christian County’s Camilo Cuadros.
The doubles team of Morgan Demps and Noah Morris will be joining them at the state tournament after beating teams from Webster County 6-4, 6-0 and Henderson 6-7 (4-7), 7-6 (7-5), 1-0 (10-3) to earn a semifinal spot. Cole Taylor and Gavin Marschand lost their first-round match to Henderson County in a 3rd-set tiebreaker 2-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-4).
