Two 4-run innings for the Henderson County Colonels were too much to overcome for the University Heights baseball team in a 12-4 loss Saturday afternoon. Six Blazer errors hurt their cause, as they drop their sixth-straight to slip to 5-9 overall. The Colonels win their third in a row to move to 13-6 on the year.
An RBI single and double along with a bases-loaded walk gave the Colonels a 4-0 first-inning lead, before they added a fifth run in the second. Another run in the third and 4 in the fourth stretched the lead to double-digits at 10-0, but the Blazers showed some life with 2 runs in the bottom of the fifth. Sophomore Scribby Goode doubled to score senior Malik Lovan, followed by a ground-out by junior Drew McGowan that brought in freshman Luke Welch.
In their next at bat the Blazers would take advantage of an error and a wild pitch to push 2 more runs across, but 2 Colonel runs in the top of the seventh restored the 8-run lead. Goode singled in the bottom of the inning, but three Blazer strikeouts ended the game.
Sophomore Tanner Thomas took the loss, working 4.0 innings while allowing 10 runs, 8 earned, on nine hits with a strikeout and six walks. Junior Dan Johnson turned-in three solid innings in relief, yielding 2 runs on two hits with a strikeout and a walk. Goode was 2-2 with an RBI, McGowan knocked-in a run, and Thomas and Johnson both had a hit.
Senior Alex Chumbler pitched 4.0 perfect innings for the win, striking out six. Senior Jake Willoughby was 3-3 at the plate with 4 RBI.
Up next for the Blazers is a visit from the 9-4 Livingston Central Cardinals on Tuesday.
