Three different players scored two goals, and Mauri Jenkins assisted three times as Heritage Christian Academy beat Highlands Latin 9-2 in their KCAA girls’ soccer opener in ridiculous weather Monday at Warrior Field. HCA scored five goals in the first half, with Katie Herrell scoring the first from a pass from Mauri Jenkins. Kayley Wadlington and Emilee Young followed with unassisted tallies for a 3-0 lead midway through the first half.
Herrell assisted Shaylea Turner for the fourth HCA goal, and Abbi Bullock broke into the scoring column right before halftime for a 5-0 lead.
Jenkins fed Herrell on a pass that led to her second goal of the game just minutes into the second half for a 6-0 lead.
Highlands Latin was able to score their first goal on a breakaway to cut the HCA lead to 6-1.
Bullock scored her second goal off the third assist of the game from Jenkins for a 7-1 lead.
Gillian Taylor, who started in goal for HCA, moved to the middle and scored on a 20-footer for an 8-1 lead.
Wadlington scored off a Bullock feed to round out the scoring for Heritage Christian.
Several KCAA schools are playing girls’ soccer on a trial basis in the spring in hopes they add the sport to their sanctioned offering of sports. Currently, the KCAA offers only co-ed soccer in the fall. Last year, Heritage Christian won the KCAA state tournament.
HCA improved to 2-1 overall with the win and will make the return trip to Louisville Saturday to play Highlands Latin.
