A tough start to the 2018 baseball season for the Christian County Colonels Monday night. After scoring the opening run of the game, the Colonels gave up 11 unanswered runs as the McCracken County Mustang rolled to a 11-1 win on opening night of the 2018 high school baseball season.
The night started promising for the Colonels as, with two outs in the top of the 1st inning, Wyatt Stevenson went deep to give Christian County a 1-0 lead.
The Mustangs got on the board in the bottom of the second inning. After a single and two walks loaded the bases, Kaiel Waldon came up with an infield single to tie the game at 1-1. A fielder’s choice and a Colonels error on the next batter, and McCracken pushed the lead out to 3-1. Christian County would be able to get out of the inning without any further damage.
Meanwhile, McCracken County junior hurler Garrett Crabtree found a groove on the mound. He struck out the side against the Colonels in both the second and the third inning.
Christian County starting pitcher Eric Silvey was removed after only two innings of work, with Lane Duiguid taking to the mound in the bottom of the 3rd. The Mustangs added another run in the bottom of the inning to extend the lead to 4-1. McCracken County touched Duiguid for another run in the bottom of the 4th inning to stretch the lead to 5-1.
Crabtree continued to wreak havoc on the Christian County batting order. Pitching five innings, Crabtree allowed the Colonels only one run on one hit, striking out 11 Christian County batters.
Mustang batters continued to find success against Christian County pitching, chasing Duiguid in the bottom of the 5th with two more runs. The Colonels brought in Wyatt Stevenson to try and get out of the fifth. By the end of the inning, the Mustangs held a 9-1 lead.
McCracken County then ended the game in the bottom of the 6th inning when they plated two more runs to reach the ten run rule at 11-1.
