After a bit of a lull in January, the Caldwell County Tigers appear to be hitting their stride again, just in time for next week’s 7th District tournament. The Tigers hit the road Tuesday night and came away with a solid 65-49 win over the Union County Braves.
The game opened up as a tight defensive battle, with neither team able to crank things up offensively. The Braves would lead 12-11 after the first quarter. Midway through the second quarter, the Tigers got hot from behind the arc, pulling ahead of the Braves 20-17 about halfway through the quarter. However, the two teams went back into defensive mode for the rest of the half, and Caldwell County would lead Union County only 22-20 headed into the break.
The Tigers opened the second half a bit warmer, and went on a 15-6 run to extend the lead to double digits at 37-26 with just over 3 minutes to go in the quarter. Caldwell County would continue to lead by double digits at 42-30 when the quarter ended.
The Tigers were then able to keep the Braves at bay throughout the fourth quarter and pull away for the sixteen point win.
A big night from Derrin Boyd to lead the Tigers with 25 points. John Davis added 17, including connecting on five three pointers.
The win, which was the 4th in a row for Caldwell County, improved the Tigers record to 13-12. Caldwell County hits the road Thursday to take on Todd County. The loss ended a four game winning streak for the Braves and drops their record to 13-14. The Braves will not return to action until Tuesday when they take on Webster County in the 6th District tournament.
