Hoptown’s Skuljan Wins Region Wrestling Title

Hopkinsville will take two wrestlers to the KHSAA State Wrestling Tournament, with Zlatko Skuljan winning an individual title at the Region I Tournament Saturday at Ohio County High School.

Zlatko Skuljan, who finished runner-up in the region last year, advanced to the championship match with a pair of pins. In the title match, Skuljan and his opponent Seth Slayton of Caldwell County both overcame bloody noses to resulted in three separate delays. Skuljan beat Slayton with an 8-5 decision to win the region title.

Kolby Morris overcame a semifinal loss to eventual region champion Micah Ervin of Union County in the semifinals to bounce back and claim third place with a pin of McCracken County’s Hunter Bradley.

Wrestlers who placed at the region tournament but failed to qualify for the state tournament were Hunter Dubois, who pinned Ohio County’s Zander Bunch to finish fifth in the 132-pound class; Payton Hayes, who took sixth place in the 132-pound class; Max Dubois, who finished fifth in the 138-pound class with a pin of Ohio County’s Stephen Everly; and Isaiah Riddick, who finished sixth in the 160-pound class.

Hopkinsville finished seventh with a score of 72 points.
