A quick response to an e-mail may have helped Brescia land a new volleyball player. Christian County senior Courtney Smith signed to play with the Bearcats Friday, capping a high school career that saw her ascend to a leadership position with the Lady Colonels.

Smith said she sent an e-mail to the Owensboro school about recruiting possibilities and received a quick response, asking her to make an official visit. Once she completed her visit and worked out with the team, she knew Brescia would be her college choice.

“I was already familiar with some of the players on the team, and they have some friendly people there,” Smith said. “I like that players on their team are players I have played against in high school and that I am familiar with.”

One of those players is former Christian County standout April Buckner.

Smith played in the middle and a right side hitter for most of the season, helping the Lady Colonels win 84 games in her four seasons. Smith was a freshmen when Christian County won the region title in 2014.

“They are getting someone committed to personal development and great leadership qualities that will also benefit her after college,” said Lady Colonel Coach Ashleigh Sympson.

Brescia, an NAIA school, finished 22-14 overall in 2017 and competes in the River States Conference where they posted a 13-3 record.
