The University Heights Academy girls’ basketball team moved to 2-1 on the season with a 59-35 win over the visiting Trigg County Lady Wildcats on Tuesday night. The Lady Wildcats fall to 2-3 on the year with the loss.
The Lady Wildcats started quickly, with all five starters getting on the board in the first quarter. Junior guards Bethany Stallons and Katelyn Slone hit back-to-back three pointers toward the end of the quarter to give Trigg County a 14-7 lead. However, the Lady Blazers extended their defense at the beginning of the second quarter, and the pressure changed the game. UHA outscored Trigg County 22-6 in the second frame, led by sophomore guard Lily Hendricks’ four 3 pointers. The Lady Blazers took a 29-20 lead into the half.
In the third quarter, it was senior guard Anshanique Leavell’s turn for the Lady Blazers. She scored 11 points in the period, and UHA outscored the Lady Wildcats 22-8, giving them a comfortable 51-28 lead going into the fourth quarter. From there, neither team did much scoring, with UHA content to move the ball around the perimeter to salt away the win. The final 24 point margin is the worst loss the Lady Wildcats have suffered this season.
Slone led Trigg County in scoring with 9, followed by freshman power forward Adri Phillips with 7. Stallons and senior center Lauren Oliver finished with 6, and sophomore small forward Rylee Bush had 5. Oliver led the team with 9 rebounds, Bush had 7, and Phillips had 4.
Leavell paced the Lady Blazers with 26 points, followed by Hendricks with 21. Junior guard Alex Juckett chipped in 10, and junior forward Aisha Pantiere rounded out the scoring with 2.
Next up for UHA is a trip to Murray to face Calloway County (2-1) on Saturday, while Trigg County will travel to Livingston Central (2-3) on Friday, looking for their first district win.
