It felt like a tournament matchup Thursday night as the University Heights Lady Blazers held on to beat the Hopkinsville Lady Tigers in five sets at Blazer Gym. The match determined who is the top seed , but it was not the winner of the match who got to claim that slot.
The night began with UHA needing to sweep Hoptown in three sets to lock up the top seed for the district tournament. If UHA won in four sets, there would be a coin toss. Any other result, and Hopkinsville would be the top seed for the tourney.
The night began in a promising fashion for the Lady Blazers. After falling behind early, UHA rallied to win the first set 27-25. The second set was another battle, but UHA came out on top 25-23.
Just when it looked like the Lady Tigers might be in trouble they began to fight back. Behind strong play from Sarah Cavanah, Zakyra Stallworth, and Hope Pace, Hopkinsville pulled themselves back into the match. The Lady Tigers won the 3rd and 4th sets by the scores of 25-23 and 25-23.
In the deciding 5th set, UHA got out to the lead and did not let it go, as the Lady Blazers won 15-10. UHA had strong efforts on the night from Lily Hendricks and Evelyn Morales.
Despite the loss, Hopkinsville will be the top seed in the 8th District Tournament. UHA will be the #2 seed, Christian County the #3, and Fort Campbell the #4.
