Christian County’s John Buchanan got off to a hot start and was able to stay under par for most of the day as the Colonel senior qualified for his first state tournament Monday at the Region Two Golf Tournament at the Madisonville Country Club.
Buchanan shot a 2-under 69 despite a bogey on the final hole. He finished two shots behind the winner, Hayden Riney of Owensboro Catholic. Buchanan said his ability to chip in close on several holes was a big key to his day. He shot a 34 on the front nine and a 35 on the back nine.
As a team, Christian County tied for seventh place with a score of 341. Defending region champion Carson Holmes started slow but rallied to finish with a 1-over 72 that left him one shot out of a return trip to the state golf tournament. Holmes began his day on the back nine where he shot a 39, but he equaled the low nine-hole score of the day with a 33.
Houston George shot a 97 for the Colonels, while Ethan White shot a 103, and Micah Smith had a 105.
Buchanan will play in the KHSAA/Leachman Buick State Tournament next week at the Bowling Green Country Club.
