Coach Derek McCuiston enters his third season at the helm of the Lyon County Boys’ Soccer team.  The Lyons posted a 10-11 record last season, scoring 85 goals and allowing 95. Their record within the region was 7-8 and they went 0-3 in district play. The Lyons ended their season with a 6-1 loss to Henderson County in the Second Region quarterfinals.

Lyon County has reason for optimism going into the 2017 season. Returning will be nine starters, including sophomore standout Bryson Penn. Penn was a Second Team All-Second Region selection, and led the Lyons in scoring with 33 goals and 13 assists. Joining Penn will be senior Austin Duff, who chipped in 7 goals and 11 assists. While only two players were lost to graduation, both were quality contributors. Kendall Sandoval, the second leading scorer with 28 goals and 6 assists, and Josiah Wilkerson, a standout goalkeeper who recorded 3 shutouts in 2016, will both be difficult to replace.

Lyon County will be looking to end Trigg County’s seven-year run atop the Fifth District.  Lyon hasn’t won a district title since 2007.  Lyon will also be looking to repeat as Second Region All-A Classic region champs and return to the sectionals where they lost to Murray 11-2 last year.

The Lyons open the season with a trip to Morganfield on August 15th to play Union County. Lyon County won a pair of matchups with the Braves in 2016, 7-1 away and 5-1 at Lee S. Jones Park.
