University Heights Academy opened the 2018 volleyball season with a 25-16, 25-11, 25-17 win over Trigg County at Blazer Gym.
UHA Coach Faye Hendricks had two concerns coming into the contest. The Lady Blazers played eight games over the weekend at the Bluegrass State Games, and she was worried about fatigue. UHA and Trigg traded points for most of the first set before the Lady Blazers used a 10-2 run to build a 22-12 lead and took the set 25-16.
UHA scored the first six points of the second set and never allowed the Lady Wildcats to get any closer in posting the 25-11 win.
Trigg County bounced back in the third set to grab a 12-4 lead out of the gate. UHA was able to pick away at the lead and control the net to tie the set at 14. Trigg led 15-14, but UHA scored four quick points and never trailed again.
Another concern for Hendricks was using a lineup different than what they had used over the weekend. Paperwork for junior transfer Meghan Adams had still not cleared the KHSAA, and she has not been deemed eligible to play. Hendricks is hoping the matter will be resolved this week so she can hit the court.
Trigg County had three starters on the floor making their first varsity starts for Coach Doug Hargrove, who will be looking to build the team’s depth throughout the season.
UHA returns to action Thursday at Fort Campbell, while Trigg County hosts Webster County Tuesday.
