With the state football championships now set for all six classes, post season honors are starting to be handed out for the 2017 football season. Saturday, the Kentucky Football Coaches Association announced the awards for District Player of the Year and District Coach of the Year. A pair of area coaches and players were among those honored by the association.
In Class 5A District 1, Christian County’s Corey Trice was named the Player of the Year. Trice won the award despite missing the last few games of the season due to injury. He scored five touchdowns on the season, one on a fumble return, one on an interception return and three on special teams. He was also one of the Colonels top tacklers on the season with 15 tackles and 24 assists.
In Class 4A District 1, the surprise story of the season, the Logan County Cougars swept the awards. Coach Todd Adler won the Coach of the Year Award, while Canden McKinnis won the Player of the Year award.
In Class 3A District 1, Caldwell County’s David Barnes took Coach of the Year honors. Despite significant graduation losses, and the unexpected departure of a starting quarterback, Barnes’ Tigers won 10 games and advanced to the regional final for the third straight year.
