Muhlenberg County freshman Jake Allen blanked Caldwell County on five base hits for six innings and got relief help from junior Caden Byars as the host Mustangs defeated the Tigers 4-0 on Monday.
Meanwhile, Caldwell senior Gabe East pitched well, but gave up four earned runs on six base hits while striking out 10 and walking just one.
A two-out, two-run double by Drew Travis allowed Muhlenberg (6-10) to take a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.
That’s where the score remained until the Mustangs tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Caldwell (8-8) tried to put together a two-out rally in the third when East doubled and Oliver Parker singled. But a grounder to third left those runners stranded.
The Tigers put two on with two outs in the sixth on singles by Tate VanHooser and Brian Owen. But a strikeout ended that threat.
Muhlenberg then got another big two-out hit in the bottom of the sixth when Ryan O’Neal doubled home two more runs to make it 4-0.
Caldwell was retired in order in the top of the seventh.
Parker was the only Tiger with more than one base hit, going 2-for-3.
Travis was 3-for-3 for Muhlenberg with a pair of RBIs.
