A tough first quarter was too much for the Hopkinsville Lady Tigers to overcome Monday night. Marshall County opened the game against the Lady Tigers on a 10-2 run and never looked back, on their way to a 65-54 win at Tiger Gym.
After jumping out to the 8 point lead, the Lady Marshalls would lead by as many as 14 in the first quarter, at 18-4, before the Lady Tigers made a brief rally to trim the lead to 20-9 after the opening quarter. Jayla Rose kept Hopkinsville within shouting distance in the first quarter, scoring eight of the Lady Tigers nine points.
After a made Breon Oldham free throw, the Lady Tigers had trimmed the lead to seven points at 22-15. However, as it would be all night long, Marshall County would seem to find an answer every time it seemed like Hopkinsville was about to make a move to bid for the lead. Marshall County would fight off this challenge and lead by as many as 13 again in the quarter, before going to the locker room with a 33-22 lead.
The Lady Marshals opened the second half as if they were ready to put the game away. Marshall County came out of the locker room and ran off an 11-4 blitz to extend the lead out to 44-26. The lead would still be at 16 points when the quarter ended at 50-34.
Hopkinsville would make one last push to try to fight their way back into the game. The Lady Tigers would outscore Marshall County 11-4 at the beginning of the final quarter to cut the lead down to just nine points at 54-45 with 3:31 left. But again, Marshall County responded to the threat, this time it was a three pointer from Cayson Conner to make it a 12-point lead. Another basket by Lorin Powell would essentially seal the win for the Lady Marshals.
Jayla Rose had a big night for the Lady Tigers with 25 points. Breon Oldham added 10 points, while Yogi McKnight ended up with 9.
The Lady Marshals were led by Cayson Conner with 27. Lorin Powell chipped in with 19 points.
