The home slate of Hopkinsville’s 2018-2019 swim season came to a close on Tuesday night, as the Tigers hosted both Logan County High School and Russellville High School. The home finale was spent in celebration, recognizing the following senior swimmers: Ashley Howard, Jadyn Hicks, Koby Batts, Madyson Merrick, Mark Poindexter, Spencer Walker and Taylor Franklin.

To no surprise, Hopkinsville claimed first-place finishes in all but one of the 24 events. Specifically, Hoptown seniors took first in six of the 18 individual events.

Hicks was the star of the meet, combining to earn four first-place finishes. He first swam the butterfly leg in the 200 Yard Medley Relay, followed by taking first place in the 200 Yard Freestyle. The senior standout added to his final sendoff with a win in the 500 yard Freestyle and swimming the leadoff leg of the victorious Boys 200 Yard Freestyle Relay team.

Merrick joined Hicks with an abundance of success, also going 4/4 for first-place touches. She began her night by swimming the backstroke leg of the 200 Yard Medley Relay, followed by winning the 200 Yard IM and the 100 Yard Backstroke. She capped off her night by leading off Hoptown’s 400 Yard Freestyle Relay, which finished first by a wide margin.

Walker’s 200 Yard Medley Relay team placed second while he individually finished runner-up in the 100 Yard Butterfly. However, that didn’t hold him back from snatching a couple of wins. Walker earned the top-finish in the 50 Yard Freestyle before swimming the third leg of Hoptown’s winning 400 Yard Freestyle Relay.

Batts led off with the backstroke leg in Hoptown’s 200 Yard Medley Relay, aiding in the first place finish. He placed third in the 200 Yard Freestyle and first in the 100 Yard Butterfly. Batts also swam the leadoff leg of Hoptown’s first-place 400 Yard Freestyle Relay team.

Franklin competed in two individual events. He finished sixth in the 100 Yard Freestyle and then claimed the 100 Yard Backstroke title. Howard, who also swam in two individual events, took third in the Girls 200 Yard Freestyle and sixth in the 100 Yard Freestyle. She was also a member of Hopkinsville’s B relay in the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay, swimming the leadoff leg and earning a second place finish.

Poindexter ended his home slate on a high note, too, adding a first place as well. The senior began the meet by swimming the freestyle leg of his second-place 200 Yard Medley Relay team. Poindexter then placed eighth in the 50 Yard Freestyle before swimming the third leg of Hoptown’s winning 200 Yard Freestyle Relay. He ended his night with a fourth place finish in the 100 Yard Breaststroke.

Russellville’s Daisy Lewis was the lone non-Tiger to claim first place on Tuesday, winning the Girls 100 Yard Freestyle.

Hopkinsville’s final regular season meet will take place in Bowling Green next Tuesday before the team begins to prepare for the Regional Championships in February.
