Webster County has strengthened their grasp of the top spot in this week’s YSE Girls’ Basketball Super 7 and is the odds-on favorite to make a return to Northern Kentucky and the Sweet 16. But there is still plenty of basketball to be played, including the possibility of three more games between the top teams.
1) Webster County (17-2) – Why are the Lady Trojans the No. 1 team? They lead the region in shooting, 3-point shooting, scoring offense, and scoring defense. They are 17-0 against Kentucky schools and 7-0 against the region after beating No. 2 Henderson County 56-47 Tuesday. They have won 16 straight games against region opposition and will see Henderson County again Jan. 25.
2) Henderson County (8-3) – The Lady Colonels have only played two games against region competition – an eight-point win over Hopkins County Central and a nine-point loss to Henderson County. Their next four games are against teams in the YSE Super 7 which will either solidify their No. 2 ranking or see them drop.
3) Christian County (9-6) – The Lady Colonels have won three of four games and appear to have a solid rotation set. Their only loss in 2019 came to a 14-2 Barren County squad. Christian County will put their ranking on the line Friday against No. 4 Hopkinsville and Thursday against No. 5 Madisonville.
4) Hopkinsville (12-9) – The Lady Tigers are seeking to find their footing after dropping four of five games. With two starters out due to suspension, Hoptown was able to develop some depth that may pay off down the road. The Lady Tigers play cross-town rival Christian County Friday as they look to bounce back.
5) Madisonville (13-3) – Two of the Lady Maroons’ three losses are to No. 1 Webster County. While they own a nine-point win over No. 4 Hopkinsville, it came with Hopkinsville’s leading scorer and their leading rebounder on the bench. The Lady Maroons are the mystery team of the region. Their upcoming games with Henderson County (Jan. 12) and Christian County (Jan. 17) will give them an idea of where they stand with two other teams ranked ahead of them.
6) Hopkins County Central (8-9) – The Lady Storm are a mercurial bunch. They lost to No. 2 Henderson County by eight points and beat No. 7 Caldwell County by one point but got hammered by Calloway County and Apollo. Hopkins Central is 4-3 against region competition.
7) Caldwell County (7-9) – The Lady Tigers are like Hopkins Central, more ups and downs than a Holiday World rollercoaster. They have dropped three straight games to region teams, including blowout losses to No. 1 Webster County and No. 5 Madisonville. They are 5-5 against the region.
