Kyky Tandy poured in 31 points and the University Heights Academy boys’ basketball team built a 30-plus-point lead in the fourth quarter on the way to a 85-63 victory over Christian County in Colonel Gym on Monday night.
The Blazers win their sixth-straight to move to 15-2 overall, 2-0 in the 8th District. After a strong showing before the New Year, the Colonels have lost three of four in 2019 to slip to 8-9 on the year, 1-2 against district competition.
Fred Tandy scored the first 6 for the Colonels, but UHA’s Tandy responded with 7 of his own to give the Blazers a 3-point edge with 3 minutes gone. Eric Brody scored the next 7 to restore the Colonels’ lead at 13-9 and force a UHA timeout. The Blazers scored the next 9 out of the timeout, with TaQuan Hollowell punctuating the run with a dunk and a layup to beat the first-quarter buzzer.
Kyky Tandy stretched the Blazer lead to 10 with 5 points to start the second quarter. DT Babb scored and hit one of two free throws to trim the margin to 9, but UHA’s Will Bryan scored 4 in a row to make the score 38-25. The Blazers led by 15 at the halftime break, and would maintain a double-digit edge the rest of the way.
A Hollowell bucket 3 minutes into the second half gave UHA a 20-point cushion, before Drew McGowan scored the final 5 points of the third quarter for a 65-41 advantage.
UHA continued to build the lead in the final quarter, leading by as many as 33 at 77-44 after a Tandy 3-pointer with 5 minutes to play, before settling for the 22-point victory.
Tandy finished with a game-high 31 for the Blazers, followed by Hollowell with 21, McGowan with 16, and Bryan with 11. Point guard KJ Crump went down with an injury in the first quarter and didn’t return.
Fred Tandy scored 18 to lead the Colonels, joined in double figures by Brody with 10. Christian County was playing without point guard DaMikeon Mathis and Stephon Bussell.
