The Christian County Colonels used a fast start and a strong finish to get past Apollo during the Colonels first preseason scrimmage Saturday afternoon at Marshall County. Whilen the scoreboard at the arena was reset after each quarter, the Colonels unofficially took the contest 67-48, winning the first and 4th quarters, while the Eagles took the 2nd and 3rd.
The Colonels blasted the Eagles in the opening period of play. With Christian County holding an 8-5 lead, the Colonels ripped off the final 18 points of the quarter to win it 26-5. Damikeon Mathis had a big quarter for the Colonels, scoring 10 ten points.
Apollo had the quick start in the second quarter. The Eagles flew out to a 13-2 lead. The Colonels, behind their defensive pressure and the scoring of Mathis, closed the margin to 15-11 at the end of the quarter. Mathis had 15 points at the half, while Stephen Bussell added seven.
The Eagles had their best quarter of the day in the third. Apollo jumped out to a quick 6-2 lead. The Eagles then kept the Colonels at bay, and their 3-pointer at the buzzer gave them their biggest margin of the third quarter at 15-8.
In the fourth, the Colonels got their defensive pressure cranked back up, and it began to wear the Eagles down. Leading 5-4, Christian County went on an 8-0 run to go up 13-4 and they were never threatened again in the quarter from that point on, as they went on to take the fourth 22-13.
Damikeon Mathis led the Colonels in scoring for the day with 17 points. Stephen Bussell added 16 points for Christian County.
