Like a swimmer laboring in the deep end of the swimming pool, Hannah Sumner did just enough to keep her head above water Tuesday in the first round of the Leachman Buick-GMC-Cadillac/KHSAA State Golf Tournament.
The Christian County senior shot a 43 on the front nine and began the back nine with a birdie on No. 10. After two pars, she found herself at 6-over with six holes to play. That’s when the metaphorical deep water came into play. Sumner bogeyed No. 13 and triple-bogeyed the par-5 14th hole. She rebounded to par the 15th hole but finished seven over on her final three holes.
Sumner finished her round with a 17-over 89 to finish tied for 75th and missed the cut by one shot in what proved the final golf match of her high school career. She was the first Lady Colonel to play at the state golf tournament in 13 years and has committed to continuing her golf career at Lindsey Wilson College.
