It’s been an emotional two months for the golfing Brown family of Lyon County. Cathryn provided some inspiration Tuesday with a score of 81 in the first round of the Leachman Buick-GMC-Cadillac/KHSAA State Golf Tournament. She is tied for 23rd place and advanced to Wednesday’s second and final day.

The Lyon County freshman was quick to point out afterward that her older brother Cullan shot an 82 in his first round at the state tourney. While Cathryn enjoyed her walk around the Bowling Green Country Club Tuesday, Cullan, a former state champion golfer in high school, was in Lexington undergoing a round of chemotherapy. Cullan was diagnosed with a rare form of bone cancer two months ago that caused the University of Kentucky golfer to withdraw from school.

“He just told me to go out there and play my game,” Cathryn said after her round Tuesday.

She got off to a rough start with a double bogey on No. 1 and a bogey on two. She finished the front nine with three pars and four bogeys to go out with a 7-over 43.

Brown found her rhythm on the back nine with pars on 10 and 11 and consecutive birdies on 12 and 13 to move to 5-over par. She finished at four over par on her final five holes to shoot a 2-over on the back nine and nine over for the round.

She will now advance to Wednesday’s second round.
