Matt Harper abruptly resigned as Trigg County girls’ soccer coach Sunday. The team was informed of the decision prior to their Monday game with St. Mary, which ended up being a 3-0 loss for the Lady Wildcats.
Harper told YourSportsEdge.com Monday night that the decision was his and that “he did what he felt was best for the program.” Assistant coach Sean Miller will serve as head coach the remainder of the season and will be assisted by co-athletic director Matt Wilder.
Wilder said Harper turned in his resignation Friday and that Sunday was his last day as coach. He would not get into specifics about the reasoning for Harper’s resignation.
Harper was 22-25-3 in just over two seasons as head coach. The Lady Wildcats won the district title in 2017 and advanced to the region semifinals.
Trigg was 5-5 this year and picked up a big win last week over Lyon County that gives them the inside track at the top seed in the district tournament.
Harper said there were no immediate coaching opportunities that caused him to resign. However, a source with knowledge of the situation told YourSportsEdge.com last week there were some internal differences between some players, parents, and Harper. Several players were visibly upset Monday when they learned Harper had resigned.
Trigg County lost to St. Mary 3-0 Monday and will play a district game at Crittenden County Tuesday.
